News from Windflower Farm
Delivery #21, October 22, 2026
We are beyond the peak colors of fall here, which were hurried along by the rainy and windy days of the past week. The last golden sugar maple leaves out our front window are barely hanging on. For a little while, we will still have the green of the black locusts bordering our fields and the lawn around our house, and then we’ll be on to the dull greys of winter, at least until the first snow brightens our landscape. It has become cold: our first serious frost came last night when we had temperatures well below freezing for over nine hours. Anything sensitive that was not covered was lost. The first two hours of each workday are now spent in the barn or greenhouse trimming leeks or washing potatoes, etc. The kitchen oven has become the chief means of heating our house. It’s our favorite time in the kitchen. We have been roasting vegetables every morning. One of us chops up potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots or winter squash, individually or all together, puts them in a covered dish and places them in the oven. They are our healthy substitute for bags of chips or pretzels.
Last week for the odd-week (aka green) members If you signed up for an every-other-week share (aka, a half share) and received your vegetables on odd-numbered pickup weeks, this will be your last share of the season. Thank you very much for being with us. We sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed the experience. Please send us an email with any kind of feedback you think might help us be better at what we do or anything else on your mind – we’d love to hear from you!
Winter share news. Purchasing a winter share is your chance to extend the fruit and vegetable season through the New Year. What is it? In a nutshell, the winter share consists of a total of three one-bushel boxes, one delivered every fourth Saturday from mid-November through early January. It contains a big bag of fresh greens (kale, spinach and more), 8-10 lb. of vegetables from our root cellar (including winter squashes, “Irish” and sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, and other storage veggies), 4-6 lb. of delicious apples (and pears if available) from the Borden Farm, and a sweet treat every so often (the Borden’s apple cider and Harry’s honey). Optional grain, maple and egg shares are also available. Please click on Windflower Farm's 2026-2027 Winter Share link for more details and to sign up. We hope you’ll join us for the winter share season!
Take care, Ted
