Guess how many veggies…

Last week, we held a “guess how many veggies in the bin” contest for our young members - we had 50 onions and 40 sweet potatoes! Congratulations to Ursula, Agnes, Roy, Jesse, Zinnia, Arpi, Milo, and Neeharika for their winning guesses. Our winners were all within 5 of the actual number, and Ursula guessed the exact correct number of onions!

News from Windflower Farm

Delivery #20, October 15, 2026

We have been putting the farm to rest. Vegetable farms can be messy, and it feels good to clean up. This entails the romantic work of picking up old mulch, sandbags, and row covers, and bundling drip irrigation lines and the larger header and supply lines. It means washing down and oiling farm equipment and tucking it away. It means tilling under the crops in our caterpillar tunnels and sowing a cover crop inside and giving the compost piles a last turn. It means getting spring supplies in and finding safe places in which to store them. It also means harvesting the last beets, carrots, celeriac, leeks, kohlrabi, fennel, and cabbages and tucking them away with the crops that will fill out our winter share, including potatoes, onions and sweet potatoes. And it means planting the winter greenhouses and installing hoops and covers over top of them and planting next year’s onions in the field and tucking them under their row covers. It’s a busy time on the farm.

We experienced our first light frost last week and another is expected this Friday. The field season is coming to an end, and our summer CSA season will conclude on Thursday, October 29th. I can imagine you needing a break from our weekly deliveries after 22 weeks. But if, after your break, you think you might want to get a CSA box every four weeks through the coming early winter, consider a winter share.

The winter share consists of three once-a-month deliveries on Saturdays from mid-November through mid-January. You’ll get a full bushel of vegetables from our root cellar, apples from a neighbor’s orchard, a heap of fresh greens from our winter greenhouse, and occasional treats like apples cider and local honey. Shares of eggs, maple products, and grains will also be available. Follow this link for details: Windflower Farm's 2026-2027 Winter Share.

Take care, Ted
