WINDFLOWER FARM NEWS
Delivery #18, Week of October 8, 2012
Cold weather has arrived here, in Washington County, and members of the farm crew have already dug out their winter hats and gloves. We are expecting our first frost to arrive tonight and, in preparation, have been covering tender crops with protective fabrics. It appears that the fall foliage season is now at its peak, although it is difficult to say because the rainy weather has muted the colors. This year’s scheme is comprised mostly of oranges and yellows, and the spectacle has been brilliant in those rare moments when the sun has shown. This week’s share includes what are likely the last of our tomatoes, including some green fruits that might be used for chutneys or salsas or deep fried, a head of lettuce, a bunch of spinach, potatoes, leeks, miscellaneous winter squashes, garlic, probably the last of our peppers (or eggplants), Japanese turnips, parsley, and your choice of two greens from a line-up that includes tatsoi, kale, Swiss chard, bok choy, Vitamin Green and Tokyo Bekana. Among the items we’ll be sending next week are carrots, broccolini, potatoes, Rosemary, acorn squashes, radishes and a variety of cooking and salad greens. Your fruit share will consist of apples. Next week, or perhaps the week after, we’ll be sending the Borden’s wonderful cider.
Below you’ll find our winter share brochure and a link for signing up for the share. Share numbers are limited to about a third of our summer membership, so sign up early to guaranty your spot. The deadline is October 31st.
Have a great week, Ted
