This Week's Share
We didn't get a letter from Ted this week, but we're guessing he's keeping himself busy busy. This week will most likely be similar to last week's. More tomatoes, greens, corn, onions, ect... enjoy!
AROUND TOWN
There's a lot happening this month that's food related- some things close by- here in Brooklyn and others a few more subway stops away. Here's a collection of some of the events happening, and some favorite neighborhood food spots. I Hope you have time to check them out!
A BENEFIT DINER IN SUPPORT OF JUST FOOD
Tickets are still available for Just Food's seventh annual tasting benefit, Let Us Eat Local! And this year Just Food is offering a 15% discount on tickets to CSA members!
Enjoy unique, seasonal tastings from over 30 of NYC's most celebrated chefs while supporting Just Food's mission to make fresh, local food available in underserved NYC neighborhoods. This year's Let Us Eat Local will be held on September 17th at The Altman Building from 7:30-10pm, with a VIP Hour from 6:30-7:30pm featuring cocktails and raw bar by abc cocina, Blue Hill, L&W Oyster Co. and Print.
Also- When you buy your ticket be sure to let them know that you are a member of our CSA. If our CSA has the greatest representation at Let Us Eat Local, each person from the CSA who purchased a ticket will also receive a complementary ticket to the 2015 Just Food Conference!
NYC HONEY WEEK PRESENTS: HONEYFEST
Buzz Buzz! Returning to Rockaway Boardwalk for its fourth year, NYC Honey Fest is a celebration of the amazing pollinators who make the five boroughs their home. This free, daylong festival features art, food, music, film, kids’ arts and crafts, and a bee-product marketplace. Fun for the whole family, Honey Fest is a perfect way to close out the summer. Gather ye buds and enjoy the sunshine before autumn arrives by spending the day at the beach sampling the very best of NYC's liquid gold.
WHEN: This Saturday, 11AM - Dusk
WHERE: Rockaway Beach @ 97th and Ocean
BKLYN LARDER
Now that Choice Greene, is under renovation, and possibly not returning because it's turning into a restaurant, (which I hear through the grape vine ;)- where's a good place to get cured meats, wholesale olives, artisan cheese, chocolates, vinegars, oils and other kitchen goodies? One place, that's not too far away-
228 Flatbush Ave between Sixth Ave and Bergen St
Franny's owners Francine Stephens and Andrew Feinberg have opened this specialty-foods store near their Flatbush Avenue pizzeria. Inside the white-tiled space, international cheeses and cured meats are sold alongside homemade sausages, while a frequently changing menu of sandwiches and seasonal dishes allows customers to carry their dinners home.
Another, much smaller, yet closer option is:
BROOKLYN VICTORY GARDEN
Located on Fulton Street, between Washington and St. James, this little store has a small cheese and meat counter, offers fresh baked goods- such as breads and pastries, beer on tap (just bring your growler and fill up!), a very small selection of pantry items like jams, and chocolate (the essentials), and of course, cold-brewed iced coffee.
They also offer a small selection of delicious vegan products such as Basilicotta, and Faux Gras.
Everything they offer is locally and ethically sourced.
DOUGH DOUGHNUTS
Just a shout-out to Dough! You know it's a short walk from P.S. 56 right? Looking for the most amazing doughnut you've ever had, PLUS the largest 3$ iced coffee in these parts? Then walk on down to the corner of Lafayette and Franklin, and have your dreams fulfilled.
