News from Windflower Farm

Delivery #5, July 2, 2026

To take the edge off this weekโ€™s heat, we have been irrigating everything. Yesterday, we hit the field greens and the tunnel tomatoes and peppers. Today, our focus has been on onions and potatoes, two of my favorite vegetables to grow and to eat. Your fall onions are on a silver mulch this year, which is supposed to reflect the light, and with it the heat, and to confuse an insect called thrips, which is a tiny nocturnal bug that does outsized damage to organic crops, rasping and sucking and leaving the wounded plant susceptible to infection. The silver mulch, something of a spectacle, has caused passing cars to slow. But it has been a cool spring until recently, and time will tell if it was a mistake to use a cooling mulch. Weeding has had to be confined to overcast days because of the reflectivity of the mulch. Everyone wears sunglasses and, if just for a minute, we are the cool kids. We are watering the onions with drip irrigation, all the water in the right spot, two hours the equivalent of a ยพ inch rainfall. These short nights of the year are triggering the onions to form bulbs, and they need all the water they can get. Now on to the potatoes.

I hope you have a Happy Fourth of July!

Take care, Ted
