Volume 21, Week 22

Full share & 🍋 yellow🍋 half shares

218 Gates Avenue between Classon and Franklin
(IMPACCT Brooklyn at the Gibbs Mansion)
5:00 to 7:30 pm

Dear Clinton Hill CSA members,

As our summer season ends, we want to thank you for your participation this year. In last week's Beet, Ted wrote eloquently about the way the farm increasingly sources its supplies locally and in so doing makes a difference in the community. Our CSA is, with Windflower Farm, also a community. We've been reminded of this throughout the season, as we watch members linger over the bins, discussing what to do with chard and garlic scapes and kohlrabi. We love admiring your children and dogs! We thank you for your patience as we transitioned from COVID-era boxed shares back to bins, for your enthusiasm during your volunteer shifts, for being respectful guests at our IMPACCT Brooklyn location. The Clinton Hill CSA would not exist without its members, and we are grateful to every one of you!

Have a good winter, and we'll see you in the spring!

Best wishes,

Clinton Hill CSA core group

Winter Shares are still available, now with MUSHROOMS!

What is the winter share?

Three monthly deliveries, all packed to fit in a returnable box, that include (approximately)

  • 2 lbs of organically grown greens (including spinach, a variety of kales and bok choy)

  • 8-10 lb. of storage vegetables (including carrots, red and yellow onions, winter squash, a variety of potatoes, beets, leeks, sweet potatoes, shallots, popcorn and more)

  • 4-6 lb. of fruits, and either apple cider, Deb's homemade jelly made from her organic berries or local honey

  • Extras: You can order eggs and maple products from Davis Family Farm, and Grains from Hickory Wind Farm when you order your Winter vegetable share. Other extras, like bread, mushrooms, and herbal medicine, may be available separately - stay tuned!

Where and when do I pick up?

Distribution will take place on three Saturdays: November 19th, December 10th, and January 7th, from 2:30-4pm at 345 Waverly Ave (between Lafayette and Greene) in Clinton Hill!

How do I sign up?

If you would like to sign up for the winter share, please register here: Windflower Farm's 2022-2023 Winter Share (wufoo.com). Current Carrot Plan members: we have funds to subsidize $100 for a limited number of winter shares, so the total cost will be $74. If you are interested and a current Carrot Plan member, please request a subsidized share in the notes section of the Wufoo signup form.

Yes - you read that right - MUSHROOMS are now available with Winter Shares!

Once again, Two River Mushroom Co. will be offering organic mushrooms, which you can pick up with your winter share!

Choose from the "Forest Medley," a quart sized box (about 3/4 pound to 1 pound) of different mushroom varieties (lion's mane, oyster, trumpet, pioppino, cinnamon cap, shiitake, and more), or "Mushroom of the Month", a quart sized box of a single strain of mushroom, varying each month depending on availability.

If you can't decide, get a double share with one of each!

Single shares (one box delivered all 3 Saturdays of the winter share) are $30, double shares (two boxes delivered all 3 Saturdays) are $60, and you can order extras for Thanksgiving.

If you'd like to receive certified organic mushrooms with your Winter Share, please fill out this form by Thursday, November 17!

News from Windflower Farm

Distribution #22 - Week of October 31, 2022

The black locusts were in full bloom when we sent our first shares this year and now, just as we are to send our final shares, they are among the last trees in our hedgerow to lose their leaves, going from green to gold to brown in quick order this past week. It is Sunday and the farm team appears especially happy today. There are smiles all around. It’s 65 degrees and sunny, and the end of a long season is near. We have harvested in snow in previous Octobers; this fall we have enjoyed one lovely day after another. Wednesday, after harvesting and packing your final boxes, we’ll gather for tacos and tamales and then scatter, some of us for just a couple of weeks, and some of us until the spring.

This week’s share is your last of the season. The farm team and I would like to express our gratitude to you for being a part of our CSA this year. We hope that you’ve enjoyed the experience. We would like to especially thank the volunteers in your neighborhood whose organizational efforts make the CSA happen and enable our farm livelihoods. Consider joining the core group at your site.

I still hope to get around to producing a survey [editor’s note: we took care of it] that asks for your feedback about this year’s CSA shares and your overall CSA experience. If I don’t, please send me an email with the thoughts or suggestions that you think will help us improve in the future. Thank you.

Consider signing up for a winter share if you’d like to continue getting Windflower Farm vegetables for the next few months. If you choose not to, we hope to see you in the spring!

Wishing you a healthy winter season, Ted and the Windflower Farm team

Recipes

Cozy season: Stuffed cabbage (might I recommend using Beyond Meat?), roasted beets with feta, and my personal favorite winter dish: roasted squash (sweet potato works too) and tofu with ginger

That’s it for the Beet this season! But fear not - our website has recipes, food storage tips, and information about the vegetables you might come across in your winter share! Thank you for a wonderful season, we’ll see you in June :)
