THE BEET: VOLUME 18; WEEK 5

FULL SHARE & YELLOW HALF SHARE PICK UP TONIGHT

Pick up today: 5pm - 7:30pm at PS 56 on the corner of Gates and Downing

This Week's Share

We haven't heard from Ted this week, so it's a mystery pick-up... Based on recent snaps from the farm's Instagram feed, though, it seems likely we can expect some garlic. Enjoy!

Share Swaps for Half Share Members

We have a created a Google Group to help notify all Half Share members of other members who would like to switch their Green/Yellow share, whether it's a vegetable, fruit, flower, and/ or egg share.

You can email the whole half share group by emailing CHCSAHalfShare2019@googlegroups.com. When you reply, you can email directly to that member (or the whole group) that you are interested in switching with them. Once you've found someone to trade shares with, you can take the conversation off-line to work out the details.

Please email information@clintonhillcsa.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Coming up: Student-run Farm Market

We are excited to announce that this year there will be a student-run farm market hosted at our distribution site on select days of our CSA season!

The students are involved in the hydroponic farm at the Unison School (which shares a building with PS 56, where we distribute from) which was built by the non-profit Teens for Food Justice.

Students will be selling produce at their market that can supplement your weekly shares, if you're looking to do so (and to support this student project!)

Be sure to stop by their market on the following upcoming distribution days:

  • July 18

  • Aug 22

  • Sept 19

  • Oct 17

At The Core

Next up in our series featuring members of the CHCSA core group is...

Augustine Sasso, In-Season Treasurer

What is your name?
Augie Sasso

What is your job on the CSA core, and what does that job entail?
In-Season Treasurer. I deal with collecting money for shares and paying bills.

How long have you been part of the CSA? Of the core?
I’ve been a member of the CSA and the core since 2017.

Where did you grow up?
Brooklyn. Cypress Hills.

What do you do in your real life?
I work in development at the Columbia University Medical Center.

What's your favorite part of belonging to the CHCSA?
I would never say I’m a social person but I enjoy interacting with members at pickup and when I'm following up on payments.

What's a veggie you love? How do you cook it?
Hmm. Probably whatever vegetable I’m eating at the time. Broccoli is the one that’s most cooked at my house. Basically cooked in a pan with salt, pepper and olive oil. Steamed until it’s cooked and then browned (maybe charred) somewhat.

Veggie you're not crazy about? How do you use it?
The all-time champ was the Brussels sprout, but my wife figured out how to cook it in the oven, browning it, and thereby making it edible, even pleasant.

Something no one would guess about you?
I’m a singer.

If you were a fruit or a vegetable, what would you be?
Lemon. I love lemons.
